The cackling of the Laughing Kookaburra is a familiar part of the landscape in the bush in eastern Australia. Often given in the early morning or in the evening, this ‘laughter’ is used to maintain their territories as well as reinforce the pecking order among the birds in each group. Although they famously catch snakes, kookaburras mostly eat insects and small lizards, swooping down to snatch them from the ground.

Australian artist Nathan Ferlazzo shares his love of nature and wildlife through his intricate pen and ink illustrations. Nathan’s aim, with his unique artworks of interwoven botanicals and wildlife, is to capture the imagination of people in a way that inspires them into active conservation of these species.

The Short-beaked Echidna is one of the four living species of Echidna. It is Australia’s most widespread native mammal, being found in almost all habitats. They have extremely strong front limbs and claws, which allows them to burrow quickly with great power. It has no weapons or fighting ability but repels predators by curling into a ball and deterring them with its spines. Th Echidna lacks sweat and cannot deal with heat well, so it tends to avoid daytime activity in hot weather.
